CUBA

In 2009 Richard Sexton was granted a license by the U.S. Treasury Department to travel to Cuba for professional research. The Cuba trip and the images made there are a critical component of a larger project that involves photographing locales in Latin America and the Carribean that have particular historical and/or cultural connections to Louisiana. During the Spanish colonial period in Louisiana, Havana was the capital of the territory. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, a group of Louisiana ex-patriates moved to Cuba and founded the town of Cienfuegos, which is known in Cuba as the French town. These are two of the morenotable connections, among many others, between Louisiana and Cuba.
